블랑시는 5월 봄에 등장해 가을에 퇴장한다. 극 중간에 블랑시와 스탠리의 싸움을 나타낸 카드놀이는 블랑시가 우세하는 앞부분에서는 스탠리의 카드운이 나쁜 것으로 나타나다가 스탠리가 승리하는 마지막에서 연속으로 좋은 카드를 뽑는다. 무엇보다 블랑시는 현실과 환상을 착각하는 인물이지만 그렇기에 순수하다. 블랑시가 잃어버린 고향의 농장 이름은 벨 리브, 아름다운 꿈이란 뜻이다. 사랑했던 첫 남편은 동성애자였던 사실을 숨기고 결혼한것이었고 권총자살을 하고, 그녀가 믿었던 남자들은 그녀를 부도덕한 여자라 비난하며 버린다. 이렇게 고향에서 쫓겨나 동생 스텔라의 집으로 온 블랑시가 겪는 얘기가 희곡의 내용이다.

동생 스텔라는 현실적인 인물로, 자신의 처지를 인지하지만 만족한다. 스텔라의 남편 스탠리 코왈스키는 건장하고 강한 육체적인 남자로 매너와 에티켓을 모르며 블랑시에게 짐승같다고 평가된다.

극 중 스탠리와 미차 등 인물들은 단순한 의상을 입지만 블랑시는 화려한 모피, 흰 드레스를 입으며 종이 등을 켠다. 이는 그녀의 내면을 화려한 장신구로 꾸미지만 결국 현실에 무너지게 한다. 블랑시는 안정된 삶을 바래 새로운 사랑을 갈구하지만 결국 찾지 못하고 거짓말로라도 사랑을 만드려고 하다 실패한다. 블랑시는 어떻게든 현대에 적응해보려 노력하지만 실패하는 근대 미국인의 상징이 되었다.

이 부분에서 영어선생님으로 문학적 표현을 많이 사용하는 블랑시와 현실적인 스텔라가 대비되었다.

어째 요즘 읽는 책마다 다 위그노교가 나온다. 블랑시와 스텔라 자매의 성은 드보아다. 명백한 프랑스 혈통이긴 한데, 이미 미국으로 이주한지 몇 세대가 지난 시점에서 어느 나라 출신이다 따지는게 어이없지만 당시에는 이런 혈통주의가 있었다고 한다. 아일랜드 출신이 차별받는 일들 같은것.

비극의 시발점이 된 대사이다. 이 말을 스탠리가 몰래 듣지 않았더라도 블랑시를 그렇게 괴롭히지는 않았을텐데.

동성애자였던 블랑시의 첫 남편이 자살하는 대목. 이때 묘사가 폭력적이어서 당시에는 많은 논란을 가져왔을것 같다. 이 부분 뿐만이 아니라 다른 부분에도 성적이거나 폭력적인 비유들이 많이 있다.

극 중 계속 연주되는 블루 피아노는 블랑시의 희망을 상징한다. 폴카는 순수의 상실과 불안, 환상을 상징한다. 두 장치는 극 내내 등장하며 긴장감을 고조시키는 장치로 이용된다. 1940년대의 미국은 전후 복구를 위해 재빠르게 자본주의가 발전했고 슬럼가들이 생겨났다. 극의 배경 뉴올리언스의 슬럼가도 이 중 하나이다. 사람들은 더 이상 roraring 20s 로 대표되는 아메리칸 드림을 꿈꾸지 않고 현실을 바라보게 되었다.

극작가 테네시 윌리엄스의 누나와 어머니가 정신병을 앓았으며 본인도 동성애자로 살며 사투리로 놀림을 받았다고 한다. 그의 이런 경험들이 극에 녹아들었다.

The Desire Line ran from 1920 to 1948, at the height of streetcar use in New Orleans. The route ran down Royal, through the Quarter, to Desire Street in the Bywater district, and back up to Canal. Blanche's route in the play—"They told me to take a streetcar named Desire, transfer to one called Cemeteries and ride six blocks and get off at—Elysian Fields!"—is allegorical, taking advantage of New Orleans's colorful street names: the Desire line crossed Elysian Fields Avenue on its way to Canal Street. There, one could transfer to the Cemeteries line, which ran along Canal, blocks away from Elysian Fields.

Since the times of those earliest Polish settlers— romantics, adventurers and men simply seeking a better economic life—there have been four distinct waves of immigration to the United States from Poland. The first and smallest, occasioned by the partitioning of Poland, lasted from roughly 1800 to 1860 and was largely made up of political dissidents and those who fled after the dissolution of their national homeland. The second wave was far more significant and took place between 1860 and World War I. Immigrants during this time were in search of a better economic life and tended to be of the rural class, so-called za chleben (for bread) emigrants. A third wave lasted from the end of World War I through the end of the Cold War and again comprised dissidents and political refugees. Since the fall of the Soviet Union and Poland's democratic reforms, there has been yet a fourth wave of a seemingly more temporary immigrant group, the wakacjusze, or those who come on tourists visas but find work and stay either illegally or legally. These economic immigrants generally plan to earn money and return to Poland.
