오스카 와일드 <도리안 그레이의 초상> 독후감+인상적인 구절

도리안그레이는 내가 초등학생일때 처음 읽고 굉장히 큰 인상을 받았던 책이다. 그런데 그때는 여러모로 모르는것이 많아서 그렇구나 하고 넘어간 부분이 많은 책인데 다시 읽으면서 왜 이 책을 그토록 좋아하면서 동시에 가볍다고 여겼는지 다시 느꼈다. 우선, 책에 헨리 워튼이라는 인물이 하는 대사중 굉장히 결혼과 사랑, 여자에 대해 미소지닉한 대사가 많다는 것을 염두에 두고 읽어야 한다. 하지만 인간 욕망의 심리적 탐구와 고딕풍의 그리스식 비극에서 이 소설은 시대를 뛰어넘는 매력을 가진다.

모아보니 소설에서 인상적이어서 밑줄쳤던 부분이 죄다 헨리가 하는 말이 태반이다. 그만큼 헨리의 말이 내가 평소에 가졌던 생각과 비슷하고 굉장히 세상을 체계에서 벗어나 보는 경향이 강하다. 젊고 호기심이 많은 도리안이 헨리의 말에 끌리는 것은 당연한 결과였지 않나 싶다.

"I can sympathise with everything, except suffering," said Lord Henry, shrugging his shoulders. "I cannot sympathise with that. It is too ugly, too horrible, too distressing. There is something terribly morbid in the modern sympathy with pain. One should sympathise with the colour, the beauty, the joy of life. The less said about life's sores the better."

연극과 뮤지컬을 좋아하는 사람으로서 동감한다. 극과 이야기라는 것은 인생의 가장 강렬한 부분들을 옮겨놓은 것이기에 실제 인생보다 훨씬 개연성있고 색채가 있다고 생각한다. 하지만 헨리 경이 현실에 있다면 동족혐오가 생겼을지도 모르겠는걸

This I highly agree with, but also kind of ironic that Wilde was in fact one of the middle class people he now taunts through Dorian's words.

The young man was leaning against the mantelshelf, watching him with that strange expression that one sees on the faces of those who are absorbed in a play when some great artist is acting. There was neither real sorrow in it nor real joy. There was simply the passion of the spectator, with perhaps a flicker of triumph in his eyes.

끔찍히도 아름다운 장면. 어둡고 먼지가 쌓인 방, 흉측하게 변한 그림 앞에서 아름다운 소년이 창가에 이마를 기대는 모습이 떠올랐다.

While D and his former intimate partner Alan Campell talk, the gothic horror motif stands out greatly.

"Decay fascinates me more."

헨리와 사촌 글래디스와 대화. malady 의 뜻은 병. disease 와 같은 맥락으로 보면 된다. 예술에 빠져들어 때로는 앓는 것이 병처럼 보이기도 한다는 점에서 동의. 이 대화에서도 보이지만 헨리는 굉장히 독특하게 세상을 본다. 그를 비관적이라고 질타하면서도 서서히 소설이 진행되면서 그의 사상에 빠져들게 되고 독자들은 도리안처럼 헨리가 등장하는 것을 고대하게 된다.

The consciousness of being hunted, snared, tracked down, had begun to dominate him If the tapestry did but tremble in the wind, he shook. The dead leaves that were blown against the leaded panes seemed to him like his own wasted resolutions and wild regrets.

Actual life was chaos, but there was something terribly logical in the imagination.

제임스 베인이 자신을 죽일 것을 두려워하며 밤을 지새는 도리안. 이 페이지 전체가 아름답다. 검은 밤, 어두운 상상에 쫓겨 잠을 이루지 못하고 상상에 상상을 더하는 장면이 생생하게 느껴져서 좋다.

"I wish I could love," cried Dorian Gray, with a deep note of pathos in his voice. "But I seem to have lost the passon, and forgotten the desire. I am too much concentrated on myself. My own personality has become a burden to me. I want to escape, to go away, to forget. It was silly of me to come down here at all."

As the glass door closed behind Dorian, Lord Henry turned and looked at the Duchess with his slumberous eyes. "Are you very much in love with him?" he asked.

She did not answer for some time, but stood gazing at the landscape. "I wish I knew," she said at last.

He shook his head. "Knowledge would be fatal. It is the uncertainty that charms one. A mist makes things wonderful."

이 소설의 전체에서 헨리가 도리안의 인생이 아닌 다른 이들에게 사랑에 대해 말하는 부분이 드물다. 그런데 하필 이 부분에서 헨리가 말하는 것이 중요하게 느껴졌다. 정말 헨리가 도리안에게 느꼈던 감정이 흥미였을까? fascinated 와 love 는 다르듯, 헨리는 한번도 도리안을 like 이상으로 표현하지 않는다. 하지만 여기서 귀부인에게 묻는 질문이 마치 자기 자신에게 하는 것과 같고 모르는 것이 낫다고 하는 것도 뭔가 스스로에게 하는 말이라 느꼈다.

Alan 의 자살 소식에.. 내가 충격받았다. 도리안과 앨런 사이에 대체 무슨 일이 있었길래.. 어떤 영향을 받았길래.. 이것때문에 도리안을 용서할 수 없다. 헨리 이혼소식은 걍 당연히 느껴지고, 짧은 구간임에도 A가 좋았어서

"'what does it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose'-how does the quotation run?-'his own soul'?"

이걸 헨리가 도리안에게 물어보다니.

There are moemnts when the odour of lilas blanc passes suddenly across me, and I have to live the strangest month of my life over again.

이 소설의 중심을 관통하는 문장, 하지만 앞선 모든 내용을 단번에 부정해버리는 문장이다. 헨리가 하는 말이지만 결국 작가가 하고싶은 말이다. 도리안의 최후를 암시하는, 또 그의 죄는 온전히 그의 책임이라 도장찍는 부분.

Once it had given him pleasure to watch it changing and growing old. Of late he felt no such pleasure. It had kept him awake at night. When he had been away, he had been filled with terror lest other eyes should look upon it. It had brought melacholy across his passions. Its mere memory had marred many moments of joy. It had been like conscience to him. Yes, it had been conscience. He would destroy it.

나는 이 소설을 읽으며 굳이 도리안이 죽어서 끝나야 했을까 의문을 가졌다. 그가 죽을만큼 많은 죄를 저지른 이임은 분명하나, 도리안이 죽음으로서 소설이 갑작스럽게 도덕적인 교훈을 주며 끝나버려 허무한 느낌을 주기 때문이다. 하지만 다시 생각해보니 이 이상의 알맞은 엔딩이 없는것 같다. 자신의 영혼에, 또 자신의 아름다움을 지키느라 미쳐버린 사람이 결국 자신의 영혼마저 부정하고 스스로를 죽인 결말, 이보다 더 고딕스럽고 완벽한 결말이 어디있겠는가.

도리안은 나르시소스처럼 자신을 들여다보지만, 그가 보는 것은 그리스 신화의 그 소년이 보았던 자신의 아름다운 모습이 아니라 그림에 그려진 날로 갈수록 추악해지는 영혼이다. 자신의 타락을 제3자의 눈으로 보는, 소설을 관통하는 주제 '관객'처럼. 또 도리안이 자신을 중요하게 여기면서 다른 이들이 자신을 만질때 피하는 점도 눈여겨볼만 하다.

그런데 도리안이 신체접촉을 피하는 데에는 단순히 자기애만 있는 것은 아닌것 같다. 도리안의 어머니는 높은 귀족이지만 아버지는 중산층이었기에 도리안의 출생은 축복을 받지 못했고 그가 성인이 되어 바질과 만나기 전까지 그의 할아버지가 도리안을 싫어했다는 언급이 나오기 때문이다. 만약 이 시기에 도리안이 학대를 받았다면 책 내내 나오는 그의 손가락을 매만지고 입술을 물어뜯는 행동이 이해가 된다. 고립되었던 어린시절 탓에 헨리의 '자신의 아름다움을 탐닉하라'는 말에 더욱 매력을 느꼈을지도 모른다.

나는 이 소설을 매우 좋아한다. 와일드의 몇 안되는 장편소설이기도 하고 시인이었던 그의 유려한 문체가 돋보이기 때문이다. 또한 소설에서는 당대 사회에서 터부시 되었던 귀족들의 타락, 중산층의 위선, 동성애 등의 주제를 다룬다. 무엇보다 소설을 읽을수록 헨리라는 인물 자체에 호기심을 갖게 되고 아무것도 알려지지 않은 그들의 과거가 궁금해진다. 후반부의 스산하고 안개 찬 런던의 습한 공기가 느껴지는 전개 또한.

+. 내가 정말 좋아했던 캐릭터 Alan.. 과학과 음악을 좋아하는 청년... 이 사람을 꼭 그렇게.. 했어여만 했나...
