Taxus is a genus of coniferous trees or shrubs known as yews in the family Taxaceae. Yews occur around the globe in temperate zones of the northern hemisphere, northernmost in Norway and southernmost in the South Celebes. Some populations exist in tropical highlands.

 

Yews typically occur in the understory or canopy of moist temperate or tropical mountain forests. Elevation varies by latitude from 3,000 m (9,800 ft) in tropical forests to near sea level in its northernmost populations.[2] Yews are common in landscape architecture, giving rise to widespread naturalized populations in the United States. There, both T. baccata and Taxus cuspidata are common ornamental shrubs.[12]

T. baccata appears throughout Europe and into western Asia.[2] T. cuspidata occurs over much of East Asia, in China, Japan, Korea, and Sakhalin.[13] Taxus brevifolia ranges in the United States from California to Montana and Alaska,[12] while Taxus canadensis appears in the northeastern United States and southeast Canada.[2]

고산 지대에서 자란다. 높이 17m, 지름 1m에 달한다. 가지가 사방으로 퍼지고 큰가지와 원대는 홍갈색이며 껍질이 얕게 띠 모양으로 벗겨진다. 잎은 줄 모양으로 나선상으로 달리지만 옆으로 벋은 가지에서는 깃처럼 2줄로 배열하며, 길이 1.5~2.5mm, 너비는 2∼3mm로 표면은 짙은 녹색이고 뒷면에 황록색 줄이 있다.

잎맥은 양면으로 도드라지고 뒷면에는 가장자리와 중륵 사이에 연한 황색의 기공조선(氣孔條線:잎이 숨쉬는 부분으로 보통 잎 뒤에 흰 선으로 나타남)이 있다. 잎은 2∼3년 만에 떨어진다.

꽃은 잎겨드랑이에 달리고 단성화이며 4월에 핀다. 수꽃은 갈색으로 6개의 비늘조각으로 싸여 있고 8∼10개의 수술과 8개의 꽃밥이 있다. 암꽃은 녹색으로 달걀 모양이며 1∼2개씩 달리며 10개의 비늘조각으로 싸여 있다. 열매는 핵과(核果)로 과육은 종자의 일부만 둘러싸고 9∼10월에 붉게 익는다.

관상용으로 심으며, 재목은 가구재로 이용한다. 종의(種衣)는 식용하고, 잎은 약용한다. 한국산 주목씨눈에서 항암물질인 택솔을 대량 증식할 수 있음이 밝혀졌으며 씨눈과 잎, 줄기에 기생하는 곰팡이를 생물공학기법으로 증식, 택솔을 대량 생산하는 방법이 개발되어 상품화되었다.

한국 ·일본 ·중국 동북부 ·시베리아 등지에 분포한다. 일본산으로 원줄기가 곧게 서지 않고 밑에서 여러 개로 갈라지는 것은 눈주목(Taxus cuspidata var. nana)이라고 하며, 잎이 보다 넓고 회색이 도는 것은 회솔나무(Taxus baccata var. latifolia Nakai)라고 하며 울릉도와 북쪽에서 자란다. 원줄기가 비스듬히 자라면서 땅에 닿은 가지에서 뿌리가 내리는 것은 설악눈주목(Taxus caespitosa Nakai)이라고 하며 설악산 대청봉 근처에서 눈잣나무와 같이 자란다.
